Telling stories of Kent State’s past, present and future

Try these tips to tip the scale backwards.

Skimming through Seventeen this week, I found an article called “Secret Reasons You’re Struggling With Your Weight.” After reading it, I was shocked to find out I do almost everything on the list!

You can read the full article here, but these are the changes I’ve made to fix my top 3 problems:

Counting Sheep

The article said that people who get 6-7 hours of sleep per night are more likely to be obese. So the 4-5 hours I usually get are making me super skinny, right? Didn’t think so.

This week, I slept in about 5 minutes later every day and  took a lot of naps to add extra z’s to my routine. It may sound kindergarten-ish, but taking naps after class also put me in a better mood. And, apparently, it’s helping me lose weight. Always a plus.

What’s “stressed” spelled backwards?

I’m not the only one who takes comfort in chocolate after a stressful day, so that’s probably why stress makes you gain weight. To fix that, I came up with new remedies to help me relax and feel better.

I’ve never been one for yoga, so if I get stressed, I lie in my bed and think. It helps me sort out my problems or just completely forget them. Then, I’ll go on YouTube to get my Jack Johnson fix. He’s really good at setting a relaxing mood, and even though he is yummy, he will add zero calories to your diet.

I’ll drink to that

When you drink a pop, iced tea or frozen coffee drink, you may think it’s not as bad as having a snack. Reality check: Some of these drinks are packing 200-400 calories!

To avoid ridiculous liquid calories, I’ve started drinking more Crystal Light. My favorite flavors are Lemonade, Raspberry Ice and Green Tea. By adding a packet to a full water bottle, you’ll get a large, flavorful drink for only five calories.

While I don’t have a scale here to check my progress, I definitely feel better after making my changes. Try these out to see for yourself!
