Telling stories of Kent State’s past, present and future

I have a four-legged companion for my next workout!

Out of sight, out of mind.

That’s not always true, but that’s how some people think about working out. Even though you’ll be away from the Rec for a week, don’t let going home for spring break keep you from continuing a steady workout plan.

I know it’s sometimes hard to find a gym near your house and even harder to find one that’ll let you be a member for just a week. However, there are some easy and fun workouts you can do at home:

1. Ride a bike

You may have to dust off the handle bars before hopping on, but if you still have your bike from the good old days somewhere, take it for a trip around your neighborhood. It’s not only a great cardio workout, but it also tones your legs.

2. Go for a walk

I already have plans to take my dog, Duke, for walks around my neighborhood when I go home for break.

This is Duke when he climbed in our bath tub.

But you don’t need a four-legged companion to get in some exercise. Go for a walk with your friends, your boyfriend/girlfriend or your family. (Just don’t bring a leash if you walk with one of them.)

3. Play outside

You may brush this off as a childish tip, but running around and laughing can really burn a lot of calories. Take some of your younger family members to a park or in the backyard and relive the glorious days of recess with a game of tag or kickball.

Are you the youngest one in your family?

Do something fun with your friends. I plan on playing fetch with Duke and taking him to the park with my friends and their dogs. I might also play basketball with my boyfriend (even though I always lose to him).

No matter what you do over break to keep in shape, make sure it’s fun and doesn’t feel like a workout. I mean, it is break.
