World Travels
by Tessa Bargainnier
Fall Semester 2008, I studied abroad through Webster University in Geneva, Switzerland. I used this opportunity not only to see Switzerland, but also to travel throughout Europe. The countries I visited include Italy, Germany, France, Ireland, Austria, England and the Netherlands. I encountered many wonderful photographic opportunities that allowed me to expand my skills as a photographer.
During my international studies I met people from all over the world. In most of my classes I was the only American student, which made class discussions extremely interesting. Being in Europe during the U.S. elections really gave me an idea of how influential the American government is in the international realm.
During my first month abroad, I stayed within Switzerland, visiting the four regions the country by train with a Swiss Pass. Afterwards, I used a Eurail Pass to visit bordering countries and took flights to farther destinations. While most of my trips were long weekend excursions, I spent ten days traveling through Italy during my break between quarters.
This experience opened my eyes to new cultures, providing me with a more global view. Taking advantage of study abroad experience is something I recommend to everyone. It is an opportunity of a lifetime that truly expands your breadth of knowledge.
I returned to the United States just in time for Christmas, but on January 1 st I traveled to New Zealand for two weeks. Although this trip was a vacation, it was still very educational. MY father and I traveled via rental car up the east coast and down the west coast of the southern island, stopping at major cities along the way. Much of my trip was spent visiting my brother who is employed at Glide Omarama as a glide instructor. I took flights with him, giving me a bird’s eye view of the country. These travel opportunities have changed my perspective, making the world a smaller place.
