In a slighty sleepy daze, I walked out of the convenient shop in the Student Union the other day with an arm full of Lemsip Max Cold & Flu Capsules, Tunes Strawberry Menthol cough drops and a bottle of orange juice.
Yep, I have a case of the notorious Fresher’s Flu, as they like to call it here.
For those of us who got it so far, the germs seemed to spread like the domino effect. Olivia got a stuffy nose and cough last week, Kellie didn’t feel well last weekend, I felt stuffy and drowsy Sunday morning and Sarah lost her voice the other night. It’s pathetic when all of us sit in a row downstairs during our nightly block chats, passing around the toilet paper roll to use as tissues and hacking up a lung about every five minutes.
That’s when our British friends very blatantly say in unison: “It’s the Fresher’s Flu.”
Although they are quick to point out our sickliness and enjoy the fact that they’ve already survived the wrath of the illness last term, one of the guys offered Sarah a Lemsip tablet to take with hot water — a remedy we decided is similar to Theraflu.
Since it’s not as easy to just call home and complain about our stuffy noses and coughs, or get advice from mom about how to feel better sooner, we have adapted to being more on our own and taking care of each other and ourselves. I gave Sarah my last few Tunes; however, I think their taste is better than their level of effectiveness. And the Cold & Flu Capsules I bought seem a bit sketchy — the capsules collapse when I pop them out of the plastic case.
On that note, we’ll see how long the recovery period shall last from here.

Ah-choo! Poor girl. Depending on the drinking age in Merry Ol’, I’d also recommend a cup of some fine English tea with a drop of lemon, a spoonful (or two) of honey and a shot (or slightly less) of rum. Get well.
